Castle Craig is a residential drug and alcohol treatment centre located in Peeblesshire, Scotland. Established in 1988, the clinic provides residential care for individuals affected by alcohol and drug dependence. Castle Craig is regulated by Healthcare Improvement Scotland and accredited by Intertek ISO 9001, which rated the service as Outstanding in 2024.
Treatment Approach
Castle Craig delivers residential treatment through a structured model that combines detoxification, rehabilitation, and continuing care. Treatment is grounded in evidence-based practice and a patient-centred philosophy that recognises addiction as a long-term health condition requiring structured and compassionate care.
Residential programmes typically range from 30 to 90 days. On-site detoxification is available for alcohol, drug, and prescription medication dependence, allowing close clinical monitoring during early treatment stages. Following detox, residents progress into a rehabilitation phase focused on therapeutic engagement, routine, and preparation for sustained recovery.
Therapy and Clinical Support
Therapy at Castle Craig is delivered through a combination of group-based and individual sessions tailored to clinical needs. The clinical team includes experienced therapists trained in substance misuse and mental health care, many of whom hold professional registrations with organisations such as BACP and COSCA.
Specialist support is available for individuals managing co-occurring mental health conditions alongside addiction. Dual diagnosis care addresses a range of psychological and emotional challenges within the residential programme, with treatment plans adapted to reflect mental health history, substance use patterns, and recovery goals.
Programmes and Services
Castle Craig offers a range of residential programmes designed to support different stages of recovery:
- Foundation Programme (4–6 weeks)
- Advanced Programme with extended residential options
- Private Residential Rehab
- Continuing Care Programme
Alcohol, drug, and prescription medication detox services are provided on-site, with programme length adjusted based on clinical review and individual progress.
Accommodation and Environment
The centre is based within an 18th-century country house set in 50 acres of private parkland near the village of Blyth Bridge, around 20 miles south of Edinburgh. The countryside setting provides a calm and structured environment for residential treatment.
Bedrooms are designed to support privacy and rest, with comfortable furnishings and a peaceful atmosphere. Communal areas are used for therapy, group work, and daily activities. Outdoor access forms part of routine, including woodland walks, horticultural therapy in the Victorian walled garden, and use of the on-site gym with fitness instructors.
Aftercare and Ongoing Support
Aftercare at Castle Craig includes access to the Friday Morning Recovery Club, an online support group hosted weekly via Zoom. This service is available for 12 months following completion of residential treatment, regardless of funding method.
Former residents also gain access to the Recovery Club alumni network. This includes a quarterly email newsletter and updates on recovery-focused events, workshops, reunions, and educational resources, supporting continued connection and engagement following residential care.
